Standing in the tunnel at the Principality Stadium, waiting to lead your country out in front of 74,000 screaming fans, is the ultimate test of composure. People often ask me if the nerves ever go away. The truth is, they don’t—you just learn how to use them. Whether you are addressing a stadium or a boardroom, the challenge remains the same: how do you deliver your message with clarity and impact when the stakes are high?

In my transition from the pitch to the podium, I’ve realized that public speaking is simply another form of performance. It requires the same preparation, the same focus, and the same ‘arena mindset’ that I used throughout my rugby career.

Communication isn’t just about the words you say; it’s about the presence you bring and the connection you build with your audience.

In this post, I share my strategies for mastering the art of delivery. From techniques to ground yourself before a major presentation to the importance of authentic storytelling, we’ll explore how you can find your voice and lead the conversation, no matter how bright the lights or how high the pressure.

Authentic communication is the bridge between a leader’s vision and a team’s execution. By viewing every presentation as a ‘Test Match,’ we can apply elite sporting principles, like visual preparation and tactical breathing, to ensure our message isn’t just heard, but felt. The goal is to move from simply ‘giving a speech’ to truly inspiring an audience through presence and conviction.
